Srinagar, July 31 (GNS): Paras Health Srinagar has set a new benchmark in advanced gastroenterology after successfully performing an Endoscopic Ultrasound-guided drainage of a massive 19×12 cm walled-off pancreatic necrosis using the HOT-AXIOS stent.

According to a statement, the patient had developed the large pancreatic collection following severe pancreatitis. While such cases are usually managed with open surgery or percutaneous drainage at most centres, the hospital treated it entirely through a minimally invasive, endoscopic procedure under light sedation.

Dr. Aadil Ashraf, Associate Director of Gastroenterology at Paras Health Srinagar, said the intervention highlights the growing access to cutting-edge endoscopic care in Kashmir.

“The patient presented with a large walled-off pancreatic necrosis measuring 19×12 cm post-pancreatitis. Using EUS guidance, we drained the collection endoscopically with a HOT-AXIOS stent. This approach avoids surgery, ensures quicker recovery, and causes far less discomfort to the patient,” Dr. Ashraf said.

He added that the gastroenterology team regularly carries out complex EUS-guided therapeutic procedures for pancreatic and biliary conditions, thereby reducing dependence on invasive surgeries.

The department has also crossed the 600 EUS procedures mark, placing it among the highest-volume EUS centres in the region.

“Reaching 600 EUS procedures reflects the confidence patients have shown in us and the expertise our team has developed. We are also the largest procurers of Boston Scientific EUS equipment in J&K, which speaks to both the scale and complexity of cases we handle,” Dr. Ashraf noted.

Officials said the milestone reinforces Paras Health Srinagar’s role as a key referral centre for advanced gastrointestinal and pancreatic care in J&K, offering patients modern, minimally invasive treatments with shorter hospital stays and fewer complications.

Congratulating the team, Dr. Murtuza Habib, Associate Vice President and Facility Director, Paras Health Srinagar, said the hospital remains committed to bringing advanced medical technologies and specialist care to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.(GNS)
