Srinagar, July 31(GNS):A government primary school building along the Line of Control in Churanda village of Baramulla was damaged on Friday after a JCB machine engaged in road construction slipped down a slope and crashed into the classrooms.
Officials told GNS that the machine was deployed for PMGSY road work in Churanda when it lost control and rolled downhill, hitting the Primary School Batangi. Several classrooms of the school sustained considerable damage.
The Zonal Education Officer, Uri, has formally informed the Superintendent Engineer, PMGSY about the incident. In a communication, the ZEO said the damage occurred during ongoing developmental works and has disrupted academic activities in the school.
Thankfully, no students were hurt in the incident as classes were not in session at the time.
The ZEO has urged the executing agency to carry out urgent repairs to the affected building so that teaching can resume at the earliest.
Locals and parents have expressed concern over the safety of schools located near construction sites along the LoC and have appealed to authorities to ensure such mishaps are not repeated and that the damaged infrastructure is restored on priority.(GNS)
