Parts of Valley receive snow as rains abate after 48 hours

Srinagar, March 28 (GNS): Parts of Kashmir Valley including north Kashmir’s Gulmarg and Kupwara received fresh snowfall while rains abated after about 48 hours in Jammu and Kashmir.

An official of the Meteorological office told GNS that Srinagar received rainfall of 43mm in last 48 hours till 0830 hours on Saturday while Qazigund, Kokernag, and Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 88.4mm, 43.7mm and 14.2mm downpour respectively for the same time. Kupwara district in north Kashmir recorded snow and rainfall equivalent to 49mm of rain during the time and was second highest in the entire Valley. The world-famous Ski resort of Gulmarg also accumulated fresh snowfall and recorded rain or snow equivalent to 43.2mm. It recorded coldest night at minus 3.2 degrees Celsius in entire Valley, the official said.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar stood at 1.3 degrees Celsius against normal of 6.1 degrees Celsius for this time of the season, he said. The summer capital of the state recorded day temperature of 12.6 degrees Celsius, which was more than three degrees above than previous day and five degree less than the normal for this time of the year.   

Regarding Jammu, the official said, the winter capital of the J&K had 65.6mm of rainfall during 0830 hours on Friday till 1730 hours on Saturday.

Banihal had 88mm, Batote 133.7mm, Katra 151.8mm and Bhaderwah recorded 70 .5mm of downpour during the time.     

The MeT office has predicted improvement in weather even as it said light rains may fall at isolated places in next 24-hours.

The weatherman has also issued a yellow warning for isolated thunders and lightning with gusty winds of 30-40 Kmph in both Jammu and Kashmir regions on March 31 and April 1.

There are four types colour codes signifying the level of caution: green (which means no action), yellow (situation to be watched), amber (government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather) and red (action needed by the agencies). (GNS)
