Srinagar, Nov 5(GNS): Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar on Thursday held a press conference at the Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar, where he shared details of the major crackdown against drugs, cybercrime and traffic violations in Kashmir.

He was accompanied by senior officers of Kashmir Zone Police.

Addressing media personnel, the IGP as per GNS said the J&K Police, along with the government and society, is working to make Kashmir drug-free and cyber-safe, and appealed to the youth to play a creative and positive role.

Giving details of this year’s action under the NDPS Act, the IGP said police have registered 1,651 cases and arrested 1,941 persons involved in drug trafficking.

He said 1,711 kg of contraband has been seized and Rs 1 crore 10 lakh cash recovered, including cash seized from a recent drug racket busted in downtown Srinagar.

Properties worth Rs 154 crore belonging to drug peddlers have been attached / forfeited, while 567 bank accounts containing Rs 1 crore 71 lakh have been frozen.

Police have also destroyed illicit drug-yielding crops on 2,116 kanals of land across Kashmir.

On cybercrime, IGP Sujit Kumar said 12,385 complaints have been received on the national portal 1930, involving fraud of over Rs 54 crore.

Police have successfully recovered / blocked over Rs 7 crore 48 lakh, while other amounts are frozen or under bank liens.

He said 93 FIRs have been registered, including 7 cases related to mule accounts. He warned that cyber tricksters, including networks using local youth and foreign connections, are increasingly targeting senior citizens and vulnerable people.

The IGP also raised concern over triple riding, rash driving, modified loud exhausts and stunt biking, which endanger the lives of drivers, pedestrians, elderly and patients.

Citing a recent example, he said a 20-year-old BSc first-year student in Srinagar, who was posting stunt videos on social media, was brought in by police, counselled, and later used his own platform to appeal to other youth to avoid stunts and drug addiction.

IGP Kashmir appealed to youth struggling with substance abuse to come forward for help, assuring that their identity and privacy will be fully protected. He said drug rehabilitation support is available through centres, including the one headed by Dr. Muzaffar.

He also urged youth to stay away from fraudulent schemes, mule accounts and cyber scams.(GNS)
