Kupwara Aug 15 (GNS): District administration Kupwara held a ceremony here at Police Lines to mark 74th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday.

Chief Guest of the occasion, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Anshul Garg unfurled the tricolor, took salute and inspected the parade comprising of the contingents from JKP, IRP, CRPF, FPP, JK Home Guards and Police Commandos.

SSP Kupwara Shriram Ambarker, ADDC Mohd Ashraf Bhat, ADC Nazir Ahmad Lone, Senior Civil, Police and Army officers were present on the occasion, alongside Chairman Municipal Council Kupwara, BDC Chairpersons, PRIs and a host of government employees.

Deputy Commissioner, in his address, congratulated people on the eve of Independence Day and glorified the “freedom fighters of the nation who sacrificed their lives for attainment of freedom to the country.”

Referring to the developmental scenario in the frontier district, the DC enlisted the developmental projects which were completed during this year.

“It is for the first time that the border area – Keran situated at Line of Actual Control was connected with Grid Station, thereby providing 14,000 people in four panchayats uninterrupted power supply,” Gargh said, adding, “The border area of Machil will also get power supply soon.”

Gargh maintained that work is apace on 170 Community Bunkers in border areas of Karnah, Keran and Machill, besides, 750 Individual bunkers have also been sanctioned to border areas of the district.

“1.18 lakh farmers have been covered under KCC by Agriculture and allied departments during last month, besides, 20,000 new enrolments have been registered by Social Welfare Department under Pension scheme during last 6 months,” he said.

Regarding the development of better road connectivity, Gargh said the macadamization of 500 Km road length has been taken in hand and 50% of works have been completed so far across the district even as the administration is mulling to start the work on Rafiabad-Kupwara-Tangdar four laning this year only.

Referring to COVID-19 pandemic containment efforts, Deputy Commissioner appreciated the efforts of government employees’ especially Health, Police, Revenue, Municipality and Information Department for rendering their “best services” in the district.

Gargh took the occassion to appreciate the general public for their “cooperation with administration” in mitigating the ill effects of COVID-19 even as appealing them (people) to follow social distancing, wear masks and to avoid unnecessary venturing out of their homes.

The Deputy Commissioner meanwhile felicitated 300 COVID-19 Warriors and “Certificates of Appreciation” were given to them through concerned District officers, on the occasion.

The Deputy Commissioner also felicitated recently qualified UPSC achievers including Nadia Beigh from Punzwa area of the district.

On the occasion, as part of the celebrations, a variety of cultural programmes were presented by local artists and martial art was performed by the children.

Meanwhile, Independence Day celebrations were also held at Sub-Division Handwara, where Additional Deputy Commissioner Nazir Ahmad Mir hoisted the tricolor at DPL Handwara and took salute on the parade.

Similar function was reported from border sub-Division Karnah where BDC Chairman Tangdar Reyaz Ahmad unfurled the tricolor and took salute to the parade. (GNS)
