Srinagar, May 11 (GNS): Normal life remained affected in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday for the fourteenth day running due to lockdown in the wake of record surge in coronavirus cases, officials said.
Police and paramilitary forces put barricades on roads at many places in Srinagar as well as in other district headquarters of the Valley and the Jammu region to prevent the movement of people. However, essential and emergency services are allowed, the officials added.
Most of the shops, and other business establishments remained shut while public transport was off the roads.
Unlike last few days, the curfew was imposed with strictness with police allowing only limited vehicles to move. The action follows day after there was huge rush of people seen in markets across the Valley including Srinagar.
In view of the alarming surge in daily cases across the Kashmir Valley, Police said to have enhanced the efforts to implement the Covid-19 guidelines, SOPs and restrictions strictly throughout the valley, a police spokesman said.
“During last 24 hours, Police has arrested 145 persons, lodged 92 FIRs and also realized fine to the tune of Rs 1,09,200/- from 678 people for violating the guidelines/rules throughout Kashmir valley,” a police spokesman said in a statement in to GNS.
Besides, he said, 15 vehicles were also seized in Budgam and Kulgam for violating guidelines/restrictions and indulging in illegal extraction and transportation of minerals. “04 shopkeepers were also booked by police in Ganderbal and Handwara for violating Covid-19 norms.”
Last week, the authorities extended ‘corona curfew’ till May 17 in all districts of J&K. (GNS)
