Srinagar, Feb 19 (GNS): Two policemen were killed after a militant fired upon them from point blank range in a broad daylight attack at Bhagat Barzulla area of Srinagar on Friday, officials said.
They said that one among the policemen, Sohail Ahmad, died at SMHS where he was admitted after shifted there in critical condition.
Confirming it, medical Superintendent SMHS Hospital Dr Nazir Chowdhary told GNS that Sohail Ahmad had suffered grave injuries and succumbed at the hospital.
Meanwhile, another policeman also succumbed to the wounds. Identified as Mohammad Yusuf, the cop died at Police hospital here.
“A (militant) fired indiscriminately with an automatic weapon concealed inside his Pheran (traditional Kashmiri dress) upon unarmed J&K police personnel,” a police spokesman said.
“In this incident, two police personnel namely SgCT Mohammad Yousuf of Zurhama Kupwara and Ct Suhail Ahmad of Logripora Aishmuqam received critical gunshot injuries. They were shifted to hospital for treatment where they succumbed to their injuries,” the spokesman said.
“Investigation in the case is in progress and officers continue to work vigorously to establish the full circumstances of this (incident)”, the spokesman said in a statement.
Preliminary investigation on the basis of CCTV footages and other evidence, the spokesman said indicate involvement of two militants in the attack. “One of them identified as Saqib, a local (militant) and another (foreign militant), affiliated with LeT. Police have launched a manhunt to nab them.”
Meanwhile, a wreath laying ceremonies was held at District Police Lines Srinagar and floral tributes were paid to Mohammad Altaf, SgCT Mohammad Yousuf of Zurhama Kupwara and Ct Suhail Ahmad of Logripora Aishmuqam, he said.
“Civil, Police, CAPFs and Army Officers led by IGP Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes.”. Among others who paid tributes include IG CRPF Deepak Ratan, DIG CKR Amit Kumar-IPS, DC Srinagar & DC Budgam and other officers of Police and security forces. (GNS)
