Srinagar, Feb 02 (GNS): Police have arrested three accused persons involved in the acid attack on a girl here on Tuesday, officials said. Besides, police seized the shop for illegal sale of the acid.

“Yesterday, Police received information regarding an acid attack on a 2-year-old girl in Hawal area of Srinagar,” a police spokesman said here.

“In this regard, a case vide FIR No. 08/2022 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Nowhatta and investigation was initiated.”

Accordingly, he said, on the directions of SSP Srinagar Rakesh Balwal (IPS) a Special Investigation Team was constituted under the supervision of SP North Raja Zuhaib (JKPS) with SDPO Khanyar, SHO Police Sstation Nowhatta, SHO PS Safa Kadal and SHO Women PS Srinagar as its members.

During the preliminary investigation and technical analysis, he said, name of a suspect came up which indicated the role of the main accused namely Sajid Altaf Rather son of Mohammad Altaf Rather of Buchwara Dalgate. Subsequently, he was immediately arrested as his role came into prominence.

“During the initial questioning, it was revealed that the accused had interest in the girl and since she had rejected his engagement proposal, he had been stalking her,” he said.

The arrested accused had taken note of the timings of the girl long before this attack, he said. “The accused used to work in a medical shop and in the evening of February 1, he took break from work and went on a scooty towards the place where the girl used to work along with a co-accused namely Momin Nazir Sheikh son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh resident of Mehjoor Nagar Srinagar.”

On victim’s way back home in the late evening, the spokesman said, she was followed and acid was thrown on her and afterwards the accused ran away and went back to his shop.

“Subsequently, the second accused was also arrested and the scooty used in the commission of this heinous crime was also seized. Besides, it was further revealed that the accused had purchased the acid from Mohd Saleem son of Abdul Ganie resident of Padshahi Bagh, a motor Mechanic who works at International Motors near Durga Nath Dalgate area. He was also arrested.”

Meanwhile, he said, legal process was also initiated against the workshop as one of its employee had sold acidic material in violation of Supreme Court guidelines. “Accordingly, the shop was sealed by following due procedure by Executive Magistrate.”

The shopkeepers, he said, involved in the trade of acid are strictly instructed to follow Supreme Court directions on sale of acid, failing which legal action will be initiated against the violators. (GNS)
