Srinagar, April 11 (GNS): Maternal and paternal grandmothers of a COVID-19 patient from Kupwara were among seventeen fresh cases of novel coronavirus on Saturday, taking the number of infected persons in the J&K to 224.

Among the fresh cases also includes a woman who gave birth by cesarean delivery at a hospital in Jammu on April 11, they said.

Regarding 12 cases in Kashmir, nine are from north Kashmir districts, two from central Kashmir’s Budgam and one from southern Shopian districts, the sources said.

“2 more (coronavirus) positives from Muqam Shawali and another from Bandipora, currently residing at Trehgam. All contacts of earlier positive patients. All of them are under quarantine at COVID Hospital Kupwara and are stable,” Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Anshul Garg said.

The two patients from Muqam-e-Shawali are 70-year-old and 80-year-old grandmothers of the local COVID-19 patient, a 23-year-old youth, while the third one from Trehgam, Kupwara is a 20-year-old youth who has a history of travel to Bhopal and New Delhi.

Five cases are from Bandipora and they include 44-year-old woman, 20-year-old youth, 25-year-old female, 25-year-old youth and 70-year-old woman, all residents of Gund Jahangeer area of the district and all contacts of previous COVID-19 patients. Among the fresh cases includes a 24-year-old female from Wagub, Sopore in northern Baramulla district, they said.

Jammu reported five new cases and includes a woman from Akhnoor who gave birth to a baby at Sri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) hospital in city on Friday.

This is the J&K first case of a COVID-19 positive patient giving birth and it has led to panic mostly within the hospital.

Sources told GNS that the sample of the baby has been taken and results are awaited. “Both the mother and girl baby are healthy but the woman’s tests returning positive for the coronavirus have created panic. The hospital has many patients and this is the reason why everybody is alarmed,” a senior official said.

More than 165 cases were added in the last eleven days alone. From the time the first COVID-19 case was announced in J&K on March 09, it took about three weeks for the cases to reach 50-mark. It took the next five days for the cases to double—to cross 100—and next as many days to cross 200-mark.

From 52 reported cases by the end of last month, the J&K reached a cumulative tally of 106 cases on April 5. Till date, the officially confirmed tally stands at 224—44 in Jammu and 280 in Kashmir.
