Light Motor Vehicles To Allowed On Thoroughfare On Jan 10: Officials
Srinagar, Jan 9 (GNS): The authorities on Saturday decided to reopen the Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only road link connecting Kashmir Valley with the rest of the world, for fresh traffic on Sunday.
Official sources told GNS the decision was taken after stranded traffic was cleared on the throughfare.
“Subject to fair weather and better road condition, Light Motor Vehicles (passenger) shall be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar on highway. TCU (traffic control unit) Jammu shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic,” the traffic department said in a statement. However, the people desiring to undertake journey on the highway have been asked to confirm the status of the road from Traffic control units.
The highway reopened for stranded traffic on Thursday last after remaining closed for five consecutive days following snowfall on either side of Jawahar tunnel besides landslides and mudslides are several other places including Gangroo, Magarkote, Panthyal, Maroog, Anokhifall, Battery Chasma, Kelamorh, Seri, Cafeteria Morh, etc.
The restoration work started on Wednesday last after the weather started improving. It took couple of days for road maintenance agencies to clear the snow and debris. Nearly 4500 stranded vehicles, oil and LPG gas tankers besides load carriers carrying essential commodities were allowed move towards respectively destinations.
Mughal road, connecting Shopian and Poonch districts, also remained closed. Srinagar-Leh highway has been officially closed on the orders by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir on December 30. (GNS)
