Srinagar, Mar 25 (GNS): The persisting dilapidated road conditions of Gangbugh to Narkara road is causing anguish among the local inhabitants, with the locals seeking intervention from Deputy Commissioners of Srinagar and Budgam to address the issue.

A local delegation to GNS said that the road leading to Ompora from Gungbugh bund side (beneath Tengpora bridge) remains busy with heavy rush of private vehicles plying on this road stretch, besides tippers/trucks plying on this road carrying construction material. “These trucks & tippers have made the life of the inhabitants living in these areas very miserable”, they said.

They said the road was macadamized recently but got damaged due to heavy rush of loaded vehicles. With the result, big cracks/fissures are developed which can prove detrimental at times.

“People from Budgam-Ompora areas prefer to use this way to enter into Srinagar as it is the short-cut to reach Batmaloo/ Lalchowk areas quickly. The distance from Ompora to Batmaloo via Narkara-Gangbugh road is about 4 – 5 Kms less than the route adopted via Humhama side for Lal Chowk/Batmaloo areas”, they said.

The delegation members rued that the road on both sides has 6-7 feet drain which has been encroached at many places between Gungbugh – Laloo Hyderpora Srinagar upto Narkara Budgam areas, illegally by putting mud filling, resulting in blocking of these drains. This encroachment has further squeezed the road and is making it difficult for vehicles/ people to move freely. “Because of this encroachment, people of the area are very annoyed.”

They also said that the manhole lids at many places have broken on this road stretch which has endangered the life of the people.

“Last year, one boy met with an accident on this road (near Gungbugh Bund) and died on the spot. Now, people have put sticks/clothes/stones around these open manholes, to avoid any untoward incident in future. It is also difficult to move through this route during night hours, as the whole area is without street lights”, said one of the delegation members.

“Before, it is too late, we request the authorities especially Deputy Commissioners of Srinagar and Budgam to pay on spot visits to the said area to see the reality with their open eyes and take strict action against the officials/people who encourage such encroachments, whether Revenue/SMC officials, property dealers or land mafia”, the delegation members urged.

“We request the authorities to please look into the matter and also take strict action against the violators/ officials responsible for such encroachments. We hope that the matter is resolved on priority so that no such untoward incidents happen in future. (GNS)
