Srinagar, Sept 22 (GNS): The overnight encounter between militants and joint teams of police, CRPF and Army ended on Tuesday with the killing of a Jash-e-Mohammad militant in Chrar-i-Sharief area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

“On a specific input regarding presence of (militants) in Nowhard Chrar-i-Sharief area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 53RR and CRPF in the area,” a police spokesperson said.

“During the search operation, as the presence of (militants) got ascertained they were given opportunity to surrender. However instead they started firing indiscriminately and threw grenades upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” the spokesperson said, adding, “One Army personnel of 53RR received splinter injuries who was shifted to hospital for treatment of his injuries.”

In the ensuing encounter, the spokesperson said that one militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He has been identified as Asif Shah of Samboora Pulwama, affiliated with proscribed Jash-e-Mohammad militant outfit.

“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe his complicity in other terror crimes,” the spokesperson said. Sources said one militant managed to escape from the spot.

Meanwhile the slain militant body was sent to Handwara for the last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities.

“In this connection, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Chrar-i-Sharief and investigation has been initiated.” Meanwhile, the mobile internet services, snapped soon after the gunfight started, has been restored. (GNS)
